Is Your Personal Trainer Properly Qualified?

FACT: not all personal trainers are equally qualified. Industry surveys report that a lack of experience, knowledge, or application of professional training practices can result in the program being ineffective or worse lead to unnecessary injury. Shaping Concepts understands we may not be your only stop in your search for the right fitness training provider. We've put together a consumer guide below to help you make an informed decision when assessing other personal trainers and fitness providers in the Charleston, SC area. Read through the info then meet our team below along with visiting the "How We're Different" page to see how we stack up.

  • non-accredited certifications.
  • no formal education or degree in related field
  • provides random workouts and can't show you a professionally designed program they've designed exclusively for YOU!
  • doesn't perform a movement pattern assessment PRIOR to prescribing you exercises...without this they're simply guessing and possibly putting you at risk
  • doesn't have CPR training / certification for necessary competency in an emergency situation
  • lacks experience with effectively helping others with personal change...having been successful with getting themselves in shape doesn't necessarily equate to being able to help others do the same!
  • follows the same modalities or tends to do similar exercises with ALL their clients despite each having unique needs and preferences (giving the same exercises they personally like to do)
  • talks the talk....but doesn't walk the walk
  • demonstrates the lack of having a plan to measure progress regularly in order to make changes in exercise prescription when needed
  • they don't utilize a scientifically-based comprehensive program consisting of nutrition, strength training, mobility/flexibility and cardiovascular training.

Are they even part of a team, and if so does their training team:

  • Leverage combined expert skill sets and ideas?
  • Collaborate several expert viewpoints to best serve YOU?
  • Coordinate their efforts and share in the completion of tasks to provide you with optimal support?
  • Guarantee success if you follow the program?

Are you assigned to one trainer randomly? Here are potential pitfalls of service providers who continue to use this outdated approach:

  • Reliance on one person’s view and perception on what may work best for you
  • You being at the mercy of one person’s skill level and expertise
  • The trainer assigned to you may not have adequate experience, education, or knowledge of the research to know how to validate new fitness fads and trends for effectiveness and as a result, may fall for many of them
