From the desk of Shane Doll CPT, CSCS
Founder, Shaping Concepts Personal Training Studios

Hi, this is Shane. I wanted to share with you on this page what my philosophy is in regards to seeing results with exercise and fitness training. It's the foundation that I built Shaping Concepts on and it's what our Charleston personal trainers teach each and every day in my studios.

Here's a good starting point...

After all my years of research, study, and experimentation with nutrition, exercise, and physical conditioning I have come to the conclusion that optimal health is ONLY achieved by obtaining a balance in life, work, rest, diet and exercise.

The components work synergistically. You just can't try working on only one component (like say exercise) and be out of balance with the others and expect to see very good results.

I don't think there's any question in my book that optimal health can only be reached when all these areas are worked on simultaneously.

The overall mission of Shaping Concepts...

The mission here at Shaping Concepts is to help our clients make the necessary changes in ALL areas of their life in order to achieve the desired results no matter what their goals are.

I have come to understand without a shadow of a doubt that even the best exercise and nutrition strategies will fail in creating a body transformation if imbalances exist in some other areas.

A successful health and body transformation will ONLY be seen when a personalized fitness and nutrition program is used in conjunction with behavioral and lifestyle changes.

New habits must be practiced, re-enforced and repeated until they become part of your subconscious thought and every day living.

Personal coaching is used to help educate our clients on the necessary changes that need to be made while at the same time providing accountability, motivation and encouragement.

How often do I believe you should exercise?

It is my belief that physical activity is essential for the proper health and function of the human need it just like you need food, water and shelter.

Your body was designed to move, to do work, and be active. When you work your body you get stronger, healthier and slow the aging process. When you don't, you get weaker, diminish your health and speed up the aging process.

There's no getting around it. If you don't exercise you'll eventually pay some price. Just like the boomerang everything comes back around and sooner or later you're going to see the positive or negative outcomes of your lifestyle choices.

How often you should exercise all depends on how important these things are to you. If you ask me there's not much more important than your health, except for your salvation. Without these things what's really left?

If you want to have optimal health and function at any age you need to provide your body with some sort of physical activity at least five days a week. I don't care if it's walking, working out, gardening, swimming, just do something to provide exercise.

What is the secret to seeing results from your exercise?

I believe that the most common mistake people make with their exercise programs is failing to recognize the importance of intensity.

If you want your body to change (get stronger, add more lean muscle, burn fat, etc) you must provide it with some type of overload stimulus.

For example, if you're lifting weights doing the same 3 sets of 10 with the same weight week in and week out you're not going to see very good results. Your body will adapt to any workload you give it over time so you must change things up regularly.

You need to give your muscles a workload they're not used to!

There's just no substitute for hard work and effort. That's why it's so helpful to have a Charleston personal trainer who can push you to be your go further and challenge your body in a manner you probably won't do on your own.

Exercise principals for everyone regardless of age or fitness level...

When it comes specifically to your exercise "routines" I have some very simple guidelines.

The exercises in your workouts should mimic the movements you would complete in every day life. They should be varied and provide your body with the necessary stressors needed for adaptation and physiological improvement.

I place a high priority on stabilization, flexibility, range of motion, and ground reaction forces regardless of your age or fitness goals.

The human body was NOT designed to be exercised while sitting down...

That's why you'll find very few pieces of traditional health club equipment in our facilities. The Charleston personal trainers at Shaping Concepts have been taught to scale your workouts according to intensity and not by movements.

The human body works with the same movement patterns regardless of age and activity. Only the intensities are changed. Everyone needs to reach, rotate, push, pull and do locomotion in some way.

While there may be greater or less demands on stabilization, ground reaction forces, power, and other factors from individual to individual, the movements remain the same.

Proper function and movement of the human body is always at the base foundation of improving health and performance.

Improving function first will always equal faster and better results in the long run...

Here's the deal. If limitations are present due to muscle or postural imbalances there will be a point where improvements are difficult if not impossible to come by.

The better you move, the faster I can help you lose fat, develop lean muscle and reach all your fitness goals.

That is why I believe that bodyweight movements should always be instructed first before weighted resistance exercises can be effectively used in any workout program.

It has been my experience that failure to do so can result in injury, decreased results, and diminished returns.

Finally, I believe there is no alternative for focused effort...

Another universal truth I have found is that exceptional results are always the result of exceptional effort. No matter how much we try to kid ourselves there's no getting around this one.

That's why I insist that my trainers motivate, coach, and teach our clients to put forth nothing less than the necessary effort required to achieve their desired expectations.

Any exceptions to this rule will only result in disappointment and wasted time for both parties.

I hope this gives you a better understanding of my beliefs and the principals we live by here at Shaping Concepts.

"Working out" can mean different things to different people. While I don't believe there is a "right" or "wrong" way to exercise, I have found some universal truths that cannot be denied when it comes to achieving optimal health and wellness.
