Hi, this is Shane. I felt it was important to let you in on what my philosophy is in regards to exercise and fitness training.
After all my years in research, study, and experimentation, I have come to the conclusion that optimal health and wellness is achieved by obtaining balance in life, work, rest, diet and exercise.
The components work synergistically and optimal health can only be reached when all areas are worked on simultaneously.
The mission at Shaping Concepts is to help our clients make the necessary changes in ALL areas of their life in order to achieve their desired results.
I have come to understand without a shadow of a doubt that even the best exercise and nutrition strategies will fail in creating a body transformation if imbalances exist in some other areas.
(see my "7 Reasons You're NOT Losing Fat videos for more on this)
A successful health and body transformation will ONLY be seen when a personalized fitness and nutrition program is used in conjunction with behavioral and lifestyle changes.
New habits must be practiced, re-enforced and repeated until they become part of your subconscious thought and every day living.
Personal coaching is used to help educate our clients on the necessary changes that need to be made while at the same time providing accountability, motivation and encouragement.
How Often Should I Exercise?
It is my belief that physical activity is essential for the proper health and function of the human body and is never "optional" nor should it be done only for aesthetic reasons.
People often ask me, "Shane, how often should I exercise each week?"
I will typically respond by asking them how many days do they brush their teeth?
Most people don't even think about whether or not they should brush their teeth each day. They just do it because they've accepted it as being essential for the health of their teeth. The same thing can be said in regards to exercise and the overall health and function of the entire body.
You just need to do it, or you lose it. The "it" could be function, strength, energy, vitality, and overall health. If you don't exercise you will pay a price, someday, somehow.
If you want to have optimal health and function at any age you need to provide your body with some sort of physical activity at least five days a week. I don't care if it's walking, working out, gardening, swimming, just do something to provide exercise.
Exercise Truths For Everyone Regardless
Of Age And Fitness Levels
When it comes specifically to your exercise "routines" I have some very simple guidelines.
The exercises in your workouts should mimic the movements you would complete in every day life. They should be varied and provide the body with the necessary stressors needed for adaptation and physiological improvement.
I place a high priority on stabilization, flexibility, range of motion and ground reaction forces regardless of your age or fitness goals. The human body was not designed to be exercised while sitting down. That's why you'll find very few pieces of traditional health club equipment in our facilities.
The trainers at Shaping Concepts have been taught to scale your workouts according to intensity and not by movements. The human body works with the same movement patterns regardless of age and activity. Only the intensities are changed. Everyone needs to reach, rotate, push, pull and do locomotion in some way.
While there may be greater or less demands on stabilization, ground reaction forces, power, and other factors from individual to individual, the movements remain the same. Proper function and movement of the human body is always at the base foundation of improving health and performance.
Why Improving Function Will Always
Equal Faster And Better Results
If limitations are present due to muscle or postural imbalances there will be a point where improvements are difficult if not impossible to come by.
The better you move, the faster I can help you lose fat, develop lean muscle and reach all your fitness goals.
That is why I believe that bodyweight movements should always be instructed first before weighted resistance exercises can be effectively used in a workout program.
It has been my experience that failure to do so can result in injury, decreased results, and diminished returns.
Finally, I believe there is no alternative for dedication and focused effort. Another universal truth I have found is that exceptional results are always the result of exceptional effort.
No matter how much we try to kid ourselves there's no getting around this one.
That is why I insist that my trainers motivate, coach, and teach our clients to put forth nothing less than the necessary effort required to acheive their desired expectations.
Any exceptions to this rule will only result in disappointment and wasted time for both parties.
