Weight training machines don't work very well for the abdominals. They're designed to isolate the abs which is the last thing you want to do. Even more, I found that weight machines can actually be harmful and contribute to muscle imbalances.

Flat Stomach Mistake #2

Long duration cardio sessions are very ineffective at helping you to burn abdominal fat. The fat cells located around your stomach don't get released for fuel in the same way as fat from the rest of your body. This is why you'll hold on to that layer of fat around your stomach even after you've lost a lot of weight.

Flat Stomach Mistake #3

Crunches and sit-ups only make common muscle imbalances that many women have worse. The majority of my female clients have tight low back muscles and hip flexors along with weak glutes and core muscles. This is due to standing or sitting too much. Crunches and sit-ups being isolation exercises only serve to make what was tight even tighter and what was weak, weaker.

These are the two most worthless pieces of exercise equipment ever invented and if I had my way they'd be banned from fitness facilities!

The problem with these machines is they work by isolating your abdominal muscles instead of integrating them with the glutes, low back and hip muscles.

seated ab crunch machineAny ab exercise done while sitting down will only make muscle imbalances that promote a "pooch belly" worse. When you sit too much or you're on your feet too much (hair stylists, waitresses, etc) you'll develop tight low back muscles and hip flexors.

At the same time your inner abdominal muscles and glutes become weak and inhibited. In short, that's why your low back hurts and why your stomach doesn't hold itself in.

The muscles that are supposed to be holding your stomach in are weak and they can't do their job. The core muscles when strengthened properly serve as a natural girdle holding your stomach in effortlessly all day long.
