Hi, this is Shane and I wanted to talk to you for just a minute about the benefits of using a diet and exercise journal. I can't reinforce enough how valuable I've found this practice to be with my personal training clients.
After working with literally hundreds of personal training clients I've discovered there are 5 common characteristics that the most successful clients tend to share...

1. Accountability - they're accountable to someone other than themselves.
2. Routine Oriented - they create routines for their desired lifestyle changes.
3. Consistency - they get in their exercise sessions each week no matter what.
4. Emotionally Attached To Goals - they think about their goals often.
5. Follow a Blueprint- they don't guess but work off of a plan.
Of all the characteristics, #5 (Following a Blueprint)...is argueably the single most important factor.
If you know what you want to accomplish but have no real clear plan of getting there, I don't care how motivated you are...your chances for success are pretty slim.

I can't tell you how many people miss out on this one idea and it's so simple. You don't need to re-invent the wheel, just follow a proven model for success and tweak it for your unique needs along the way.
You must have a plan...more importantly a PERSONALIZED plan!
A common mistake I see being made all the time is an individual trying to lose weight without having ANY idea about how many calories they should be eating each day.
This is not a plan. It's called guessing!
If You Want To Be Successful With Wieght Loss Here's Seven Steps On Your Blueprint To Success...
![]()
| Find out how many calories YOUR body needs with a metabolic profile assessment (resting metabolic rate test) |
|
| Determine how many calories you're currently eating by tracking everything you eat and drink for three days. | |
| Determine your target calorie range for weight loss off the information you received from your metabolism test. | |
| Build 2-3 meal planning options that meet your calorie requirements for breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner. | |
| Use a daily journal to write down (prepare ahead of time) the meals you're going to have for the week. | |
| Use the journal to track what you actually ate versus what you had planned to eat. | |
| Have someone keep you accountable by reviewing your journal with them weekly. |

If you follow this plan you'll automatically place yourself in the top 5 % of people. A lot of this sounds like common sense and it is. It's kind of like writing down goals.
It's been proven time and time again that people who write their goals down and refer to them often, tend to reach their goals and be successful. Those who don't tend not to acheive their goals.
But so why don't more people simply write down their goals and refer to them often?
Good question...when something has been proven to help, you'd think everybody being doing it but reality proves things otherwise.
You want to be successful with your weight loss program right?
So follow this simple seven step strategy and I can assure you that you'll be significantly more successful than had you not.
That's The Bottom line...The Practice Of Journaling Flat Out Works To Help You See Better Results!
I guess because it's time consuming and requires some discipline that most people fluff it off. This is a big mistake.
Yes, it will require some effort on your part, but it's well worth it. You don't have to use a diet and exercise journal forever or count calories each day.
Once you learn the correct portion sizes for your needs, establish habits and regular routines you won't need to keep writing everything down.
I would strongly encourage you to use a daily journal in the beginning of your program and turn it in weekly to your trainer. This will be one of the best decisions you can make in the long run. I promise you it will be worth the effort.
