Hi, this is Shane Doll, owner of Shaping Concepts. I created this page to give you some insight on what to look for when considering the most appropriate senior exercise routine to start.

There are a lot of myths and misconceptions about senior fitness and I wanted to help clear the matter up so you could see optimal results regardless of where you decide to exercise.

Let me start by addressing the biggest misconception about exercising as we get older. There’s been a trend in the larger health clubs over the past decade or so to try and attract the baby boomers by replacing free weights with a lot of seated resistance machines.

The selling point is they’re easier and safer to use than free weights for the inexperienced exerciser. While that’s debatable, what’s rarely mentioned is how well these machines will really help you achieve your most pressing fitness goals. As a certified Charleston personal trainer with over 20 years experience I’ve worked with literally hundreds of senior clients on designing effective exercise programs.

In almost every instance my clients have told me one of their highest priorities is increasing strength, flexibility, and mobility so they can remain active and independent. It’s the little things like playing with their grandchildren, putting on a pair of socks without having to sit down, being able to play 18 holes of golf, etc, that outweigh the aesthetic goals of the younger crowd.

Regardless of the specific goals, there’s always one common denominator, they’re looking to move and function better. Of course everyone is interested in improving health and reducing the risk of illness and disease but it’s the movement and mobility issue that tends to get overlooked with traditional health club workouts.

The reason I bring this up is because if you go to a typical Charleston health club and start doing exercises on seated machines you’ll be doing next to nothing to improve your mobility!

I want you to think about this for a second. If you’re “exercising” by sitting on your rear end, how in the world will you be improving the way you move? Sure, you can increase strength by using machine resistance but it won’t be “functional strength.”

You want the strength, stamina, endurance, and all the other outcomes of your physical fitness routine to apply with every day life activities. Therefore you’ll want the exercise to mimic these every day life activities. Unless you plan on sitting down all the time, you’ll want to get on your feet and perform what’s called “functional strength training.”

This is nothing more than exercising the human body throughout the five main pillars of human movement. Regardless of age, everyone moves the same way, only the intensity of the movements will change. Everyone will have to squat, reach and rotate, push and pull, change levels, and perform some type of locomotion. Exercising while sitting down does nothing to improve your ability to do these movements while on your feet.
