Living in Charleston, SC certainly has its fair share of benefits. We’ve got the beaches, the warm seasonable weather, great restaurants, plenty of recreational activities, and of course lots of options for staying fit and healthy.

When the weather is nice the options for exercising outdoors are numerous. To see our top places to exercise outdoors in Charleston click on the attached link. While exercising outdoors is certainly a plus, there are times when it’s just more practical to head to the gym or fitness center.

Charleston has a pretty decent selection of health clubs, gyms, and small private fitness studios to choose from. Regardless of where you live in the Lowcountry chances are there’s an exercise facility within close proximity to home.

For a lot of people just getting started or those looking to get serious with a fitness routine the question becomes...

“Should I join a health club or a private personal training studio?”

In reality, there are pros and cons with both. In this article, I’ll discuss both options as a way to help you make an informed choice on what will be best in your situation.

Pros of joining a Charleston area health club or gym

The biggest benefit here will be the variety of options available to you. The larger health clubs have free weights, machines, cardio equipment, and typically a broad base of group exercise classes.

There’s also the plus of child care which can be a necessity for some people. If you want to swim, play racquet sports, basketball, etc, the larger health clubs will also be your best option.

Most health clubs and gyms will cost around $40-70 per month in membership fees making affordability a plus.

Con of joining a Charleston area health club or gym

The biggest disadvantage here will be that you’re left to hold yourself accountable and figure out how to best perform workouts and exercises on your own. If you’re a beginner this could be a significant negative factor. The last thing you want to be doing is wandering around aimlessly in the gym not really knowing what to do or how to do it.

You’ve got larger crowds in the health clubs and gyms so be ready for the intimidation and unwelcome stares that you may experience. If you’re experienced with knowing how to put together workout routines that produce results and have a set routine you’re disciplined with, the health clubs can be a viable option.

However, if you’re not you’ll want to consider getting some private fitness instruction before signing a long-term contract. Most Charleston health clubs and gyms provide personal training but you’ll have to do your homework to find a qualified and knowledgeable trainer.

Remember, health clubs and gyms are primarily in the business of selling memberships. That’s where they make their money. While many gyms provide personal training and fitness coaching, it’s not their core competency. This means they don’t have to be good at it. If a smaller private personal training studio doesn’t produce results for their clients they won’t be in business very long.

If the personal trainers in a gym or health club don’t do a good job, the facility will still plug along just fine selling memberships. Just be aware of the fact that you’re more likely to find an inexperienced and possibly uncertified trainer in a larger health club.

This doesn’t mean you can’t find a good one, like I said you’ll just have to do a little more homework. See my free report on “How To Choose A Personal Trainer” for tips on the right questions to ask when interviewing a prospective trainer.

Pros of joining a Charleston area private personal training studio

The biggest advantages here will be centered on seeing results. Sure the privacy factor is certainly a plus for obvious reasons, but it really comes down to seeing a return on your investment. I don’t know many people who exercise just for the fun of exercising. There’s an end objective or set of results that a person wants to see from all their hard work and dedication.

There’s no question that you’ll receive more personal attention, instruction, and be treated like a client instead of a member. This is a big difference and one I don’t want to understate.

At most health clubs or gyms you’re just another number on a spreadsheet. If you don’t show up for a workout there won’t be a follow up phone call and in essence there’s no accountability. This is where a private personal training studio can be worth every penny of your investment.

A well run studio will have systems in place with follow up phone calls, email reminders, and personalized plans built just for you. There’s also the benefit of education and coaching on matters of nutrition and diet. The investment for personal coaching, instruction, and accountability will be higher but you’re more likely to get a better return on that investment.

Cons of joining a Charleston area private personal training studio

The obvious factors here will be limited services and amenities. If you need things like child care or showers they may not be available in the smaller studios. Of course there’s also the matter of affordability. Private personal training will certainly be more of an investment than a gym membership, but many studios now provide small group options making them surprisingly affordable.

For less than $10 a workout you can have supervised instruction from a fitness professional in many small group personal training and fitness classes like boot-camp and others.

Bottom line...

Take personal tours and review your options before signing a contract with any Charleston fitness facility. Obviously things like on-line reviews and word of mouth referrals can be helpful with finding a well run Charleston gym or private personal training studio.

Even with that I recommend you take the time to go in person and tour facilities you may be considering along with talking to the managers or owners. See if it looks like it will be a good fit on all levels. Most importantly, do you feel like this is a place where you can get the results you want? If not, you’ll want to continue shopping around.

Like with most service based business, the cheapest rates or packages rarely equate to true bargains. You’ll get what you pay for so be wary of “daily deals” and ridiculously cheap offers coming from any facility. A discounted rate to get you to “try before you commit” is one thing. Cheap rates are something totally different.

Remember you’re investing in your health, your single greatest assets. Shop for bargains with commodities but certainly be cautious of doing so with services.
