Hi, this is Shane Doll. If you’re interested in learning more about fitness in Charleston, I created this page to share with you the numerous opportunities that are available to you along with a little bit about what makes my local gym so different.

Charleston, SC is a very favorable city for fitness due to its warm temperate climate, plentiful parks, beaches, and a wide variety of options for exercise. There are numerous gyms, health clubs, and fitness studios for in-door exercise and plenty of outdoor activities to choose from.

While Charleston is mostly known as a tourist destination with its rich history and Southern charm, its one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the US. With a growing economy and good quality of living, there is a large influx of young people and families relocating to Charleston each year. They bring with them a desire to take advantage of the favorable climate and wide variety of recreational activities and sports.

Anybody who thinks Charleston isn’t a health conscious city needs only to take a drive across the Arthur Ravenel Bridge on any given afternoon. You’ll find scores of people walking, running, cycling, and rollerblading. If you continue on to one of the local beaches you’ll also find people surfing, kite boarding, kayaking, etc.

Where to find Charleston fitness opportunities on the local beaches

The Charleston area has three main beach areas located in the Isle of Palms, Sullivan’s Island, and Folly Beach. They all have plenty of wide spaces and beach area for cycling, running, and other recreational exercise.

Most of the surfing is done on Folly Beach due to the better waves found on that coastline. Kite boarding and wind surfing is most favorable at Sullivan’s Island.

The Charleston area has several health clubs that provide a wide variety of amenities and fitness activities for the health conscious individual. While you won’t find the “mega health” clubs like Urban Active Gyms, Lifetime Fitness, and others that are prevalent in larger metropolitan areas you will find several options close to home regardless of where you live.

The largest health club chain in the area is East Shore Athletic Clubs with locations throughout the Charleston area. Other large health clubs include Golds Gym, Pivotal Fitness, Eco Fitness, Bluefish Fitness Club, and MUSC Wellness Center to name a few. While they are vary in amenities provided, you will find some health clubs with swimming pools, racquetball courts, basketball courts, in-door tracks, etc.

Best place to find fitness equipment in Charleston for your home or corporate fitness center

Charleston Fitness Equipment located in Mt. Pleasant is the areas largest fitness equipment retailer and distributor for residential and commercial gym equipment. They carry most all of the major lines and offer service on all types of equipment. Locally owned and operated it’s a well run business that provides first class customer service.

Personal fitness programs in Charleston for individuals looking for coaching and accountability

The Charleston area has numerous small fitness studios specializing in everything from Yoga, Pilates, Personal Training, Crossfit, Barre Fitness, etc. These facilities cater to the individual who prefers a more private, intimate setting with personal service.

Compared to the larger health clubs you’ll find these to be more relationship oriented businesses. Regardless of the type of exercise you prefer chances are you’ll find it in a small personal fitness studio somewhere in Charleston.

If you’re new to the Charleston area or considering relocating you’ll have no trouble finding both outdoor and indoor fitness activities to remain active.
