If you live in the Charleston area and are looking for information on fat loss or perhaps someone to help you personalize a fitness and nutrition routine for optimal results, you’ve come to the right place.

Hi, I’m Shane Doll, a certified Charleston personal trainer, fat loss expert, speaker, and founder of Shaping Concepts Personal Training Studios.

I’ve spent over twenty years researching fat loss strategies along with learning first hand what works and what doesn’t through extensive trial and error with literally hundreds of clients.

As a fitness coach I’ve focused solely on body transformation techniques for middle age adults. It’s my niche and specialty. I tell you all of this as a means of simply expressing my background and experience specifically with fat loss.

The tips I’m about to share with you come from hours of painstaking research and application in the real world. There’s lots of information, much of it conflicting, about how to go about losing excess body fat.

While there are several ways in which you can get the human body to release stored fat for energy, some ways will invariably promote the “boomer-rang effect” where weight gain follows weight loss.

This is often associated with individuals who follow one crash diet after the next and yo-yo up and down on the scale. I don’t recommend such strategies for obvious reasons.

Let me preface this discussion by being completely upfront with you on my philosophy with fat loss coaching and instruction. I have two guiding principals for any strategy I’ll recommend and advocate.

#1. The fat loss strategy used must promote overall health and wellness while also being effective.

There’s a myriad of bodybuilder based diet routines out there that incorporate extreme manipulation of calories and more importantly nutrients. While there’s no denying some may be effective in the short-term, they work in a way that puts significant stress on the liver, pancreas, kidneys, and other vital organs.

There are others strategies like the Atkins Diet for example, that while they can be effective, don’t promote a long-term position of health and wellness in my opinion.  Did you really think it would be “healthy” to eat copious amounts of bacon, cheese, and fats over the long-haul?

I’m a believer that an overweight body is a body out of balance. My strategies will always look to promote detoxification, cleansing, and rejuvenation at the cellular level. That’s why I don’t omit natural whole foods like greens, vegetables, and fibrous fruits.

The majority of overweight individuals have some degree of hormonal imbalance like insulin resistance for example. In order to lose excess body fat and keep it off, these imbalances must be corrected at some point in time.

The best way to achieve balance with the endocrine system will always incorporate foods that promote healing and rejuvenation with the glands. In short, I look at fat loss as a process that should work from the inside out and not vice-versa. This is in stark contrast to a lot of approaches that solely focus on significant caloric restriction and/or excessive exercise. More on that in a minute…

#2. The fat loss strategy used must incorporate physical activity and exercise.

There are a lot of fat loss methods that purposely omit exercise as part of the process. Often times this is to attract the individual who doesn’t want to exercise. We both know there will always be a market for individuals who want fast results with little effort or work required.

Commerical weight loss centers generate big time profits by using this approach. The same thing can be said for most TV infomercial products, prescription drugs, and over-the-counter weight loss aids.

I’ll tell you straight up that if the “quick and easy” approach is something that you’re looking for, there’s no need to continue reading. Nothing I’ll say from this point on will be of interest to you.

Quick-fixes will always be around to fleece people out of there hard earned money with false promises of lasting weight loss. No fat loss strategy that promotes long-term lasting weight loss will exclude exercise. The two must go together…there’s no way around it.

You should also know that many fat loss programs that omit exercise do so for another very good reason. It’s because the people selling these programs know that when exercise is combined with their method it will trigger a down-regulation in metabolism, thus bringing weight loss on the scale to a standstill.
Any program you’re being pitched where exercise is not recommended will undoubtedly come with weight gain on the other side, no matter how significant the results in the short-term. There are a lot of metabolic tricks you can use to create fast weight loss, but none that won’t also include a loss of lean muscle tissue. Just know this going in.

Alright, now having said all that, here are the essential components I use in my fat loss strategies to help clients see a body transformation.

Supportive Nutrition

Before you focus all your attention on the quantity of calories, you need to look at the quality of calories first. Don’t get me wrong though, calories do matter with fat loss. There has to be periodic times of negative caloric balances or there will be no reason for the body to tap into energy reserves.

However, the pitfall for a lot of people is focusing too much on the restriction of calories without regard for the nutrient content. Going hungry all day by skipping breakfast and only eating a couple of Lean Cuisines will cause short-term weight loss.

But as anybody who’s tried traditional dieting techniques can attest to, it doesn’t last for long. For starters, you can’t fight the hunger signals forever and sooner or later you’re going to crash. You also need to understand that while caloric restriction is certainly a factor in the fat loss equation, you can’t do it non-stop. Everything should happen in short-windows of time.

Make no mistakes about it, the quantity of your calories does matter in the long-run. If you want to lose excess body fat in a healthy way, and keep it off, you’re going to have fix the inside stuff first. All the factors that combined to create the fat gain in the first place must be addressed as it’s certainly more complex than simply “eating too much.”

There’s no doubt digestive system imbalances, hormonal imbalances, nutrient deficiencies, enzyme deficiencies, and the list could go on. The first focus on your nutrition should be a transition to consuming mostly whole, natural foods. Processed and refined foods have not place in a fat loss program, regardless of the calorie content.

A supportive nutrition diet is just like it sounds….it’s a way of eating that provides supportive nutrients to the cells.

When you begin pulling out all the unnatural food and drink and replacing it with lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, greens, nuts, seeds, eggs, omega-3 fats, and other healthy foods, you begin feeding the cells and supporting muscle.

This should be at the foundation of ANY fat loss routine. Regardless of caloric or carbohydrate manipulation, whole natural foods should make up the bulk of the diet. Whey protein and protein meal replacement shakes would compliment whole food in a supportive nutrition diet.

Cardiovascular Exercise

We’ve already talked about the importance of exercise in general with a fat loss program. Specifically, I want to address the two most essential components of exercise, cardio and resistance training. Sure, things like Yoga and Pilates can be very beneficial in a lot of ways, fat loss just isn’t high on the list. No matter how much people try to spin it, the reality is there’s simply not enough caloric expenditure or hormonal responses with these types of exercise to promote significant releases in stored fat.

You need to develop your cardiorespiratory system (heart and lungs) to become efficient at transporting oxygen and nutrients to the cells. Contrary to what some individuals will tell you there is no one single best way to do cardio. Low intensity aerobic exercise and higher intensity interval training routines both have valuable roles in fat loss. If you’re unable to do higher intensity exercise routines it doesn’t mean you can’t effectively lose fat.

For individuals who can build up their cardiovascular conditioning to do both, this will simply be the best strategy. Variety is the key with cardio.

Resistance Training

One of my golden rules for fat loss is there must be what I call “a concern for muscle.” This just means that strategies employed must work towards the preservation and building of lean muscle tissue and not the breakdown and wasting of lean muscle.

Resistance training is an essential component in helping to stabilize hormonal balances and build lean muscle. It doesn’t matter what you use for resistance be it your bodyweight, free weights, machines, bands, etc.

Some individuals look to omit resistance training either because they think cardio is going to be more important or because they don’t want to get “big and bulky” muscles. Both are faulty belief systems. Resistance training is equally important if not more important for fat loss because lean muscle is where your body will burn fat for fuel.

There’s also no need to worry about getting big and bulky muscles either as that will only come as a result of having a positive caloric balance (consuming more calories than you burn) and consistently using very heavy loads to create hypertrophy.

While all resistance training in general is going to be helpful with fat loss, one particular method called burst training (aka metabolic resistance training), is going to be the most effective due to the hormonal responses it produces.

When you work your muscles with short bursts of high intensity effort followed by brief recovery periods you promote a release of powerful fat burning hormones like adrenaline, nor-adrenaline, and growth hormone.

We specialize in burst training at my Shaping Concepts personal training studios and it’s used in combination with cardio routines and dietary changes to produce a body transformation. I’ve found no other combination to work as well for producing changes in a person’s body composition.

Rest, Recovery, Rejuvenation

This is probably one of the most overlooked areas in fat loss. You must put a priority on rest, recovery, and rejuvenation if you’re going to be successful with losing weight and keeping it off. Without adequate sleep and recovery your body will experience physiological stress which drives up cortisol production.

All the hard work you put in with exercise and watching what you eat will be for not if you’re neglecting rest and stress management. You need to remember the objective is to create the necessary hormonal balances for fat loss to occur. This requires a holistic approach with equal attention placed on exercise, diet, and rest.

Caloric Manipulation

As I previously mentioned this is where a lot of people get tripped up. Yes, you need to create periodic caloric deficits through dietary restriction and exercise but it can be overdone. The secret is to manipulate calories in a way that produces short windows of fat loss opportunity followed by re-feeds where your metabolism and hormonal balances are able to rebound.

There are several ways to accomplish this objective through things like carbohydrate cycling and intermittent fasting to name a few. Each individual will be different on what works best for their body. The objective is to experiment with different methods at various times to see what produces the best results.

A Charleston fat loss program that is designed for long-term, healthy, weight loss.

Based on what I’ve shared, you should have a pretty good idea about how I go about producing body transformations for my personal training clients. Contrary to the methods used by commercial weight loss centers and other options, I don’t promote the use of questionable drugs, shots, and severe caloric restriction diets.

There’s the “quick and easy” way and then there’s the way that involves lifestyle and habit change. As a fitness coach and health advocate I choose to promote the latter. Will there be hard work involved and commitment on your end? Yes, but then again I’ve yet to find a lot of things worth while achieving in life that didn’t require both. I won’t promise you it will be easy, only that it will be worth it.

It’s certainly understandable if you’re even the least bit skeptical right now. Repeated attempts with weight loss that didn’t work out in the long run can leave you frustrated and confused. I completely understand that but don’t give up on time tested and proven methods to change your body composition.

The methods I teach have been successfully used by hundreds of Charleston area residents to lose 20, 30, 50 pounds or more. They all started out with a bit of skepticism and doubt. The key thing is they took action and applied the principals I teach to produce change.
