One of the biggest fitness myths is that you cannot get a good workout at home. Various new home exercise programs, such as P90X, are currently doing a great job of dispelling this myth.
Functional exercise is extremely effective and doesn’t require a lot of equipment or space to get a great workout. In this article I’ve put together a list of the top five pieces of functional exercise equipment I’d recommend for home workouts.
A Stability ball, also known as a Swiss ball, is a great functional exercise tool for home workouts. Any exercise that can be done on a bench can be done on a Stability ball. Doing exercises on the ball instead of a bench gives the added benefit of engaging the core and smaller stabilizer muscles in each movement.
A Stability ball can also be used to for a wide variety of balance and stretching exercises. Finally, you can do sit-up’s and crunches on a Stability ball with much less stress on the lower back.
Weighted medicine balls are also extremely versatile and make for excellent home workout equipment. They typically range from 2 to 12 lbs, and are either made of hard rubber (which bounces very well) or traditional leather (which does not bounce much at all).
Medicine balls are perfect for adding resistance to just about any exercise including; squats, lunges, chops, presses, and numerous abdominal exercises.
TRX Suspension System
A very popular item on the market today for home workouts is the TRX suspension system. It can be hung from any crossbeam or door. The straps work by using the exerciser’s bodyweight for resistance.
By simply changing the angle you can increase intensity and resistance. This makes the TRX suspension system perfect for beginners and advanced exercisers alike. I particularly like this piece of equipment for home use because the user can quickly move from exercise to exercise without having to adjust weights or move to different machines.
Any list of the best pieces of home exercise equipment would be incomplete without dumbbells. There’s little question in my mind that dumbbells are probably the most versatile fitness equipment you can own. They can simply be used for most any exercise and provide the benefits of increased recruitment of stabilizer muscles and ease of use without changing weight plates like with barbells.
Rubber encased and vinyl dumbbells are my top choices since they’re less likely to damage carpeting and flooring. You can also consider selectorized dumbbells like PowerBlocks® which allow you to choose several different weights with one pair dumbbells.
Rounding out my top five pieces of best functional exercise equipment would be resistance bands. Once again this is a very versatile piece of equipment which is perfect for in-home use. You can attach the nylon loop on the end of the bands to a doorway or any fixed object and you’re ready to go.
They come in different colors which signify level of resistance. You’ll probably want to pick up a couple different bands just so you have different resistance levels for various exercises.
