The Battle For A Better Body Is Won Or Lost Between Your Ears

Today, this one is personal. I’ve been thinking about writing this post for some time now and I finally told myself this morning that today would be the day. I had been putting it off because it’s one of those “tough love” messages that certainly aren’t enjoyable to write, but they need to be done just the same.

I spend most of my time on this blog sharing fitness, health, and nutrition tips from research and experience so you can see the best results. While helpful, these subjects aren’t likely to “touch a chord” with you. For those of you who are struggling with a fitness program, or maybe even given up momentarily, I hope this message does exactly that.

When Information Becomes Power Instead Of Just Knowledge

Over the years I’ve gained quite a bit of knowledge on the physiological reasons for why people get stuck and struggle seeing results. Being able to bring hidden obstacles like hormonal imbalances to light is certainly helpful for the individual who is desperately searching for answers. However, information is only power for the person who is ready to take action and apply it to his or her benefit.

Although I know in my heart this is the truth, it still pains me when I see people struggle and fail. As someone who is passionate about helping everyone achieve the quality of life, body, and health they want (and rightly deserve), it’s tough to see people fall short and not follow through.

As a coach I’m constantly asking myself, “what can I do differently, how can I do a better job of helping people stick with it?” After all that’s my job. My own success or failure as a fitness professional depends on how well I’m able to connect and make a difference in helping people change their lives.

I have no doubt that the pressure I put on myself inevitably sustains my drive and passion as a coach. The more I persist in growing and learning the more effective I’ll become.

Having said that, I’ve also come to the conclusion that no matter how good I become at what I do, I’ll only be able to help those who are ready to help themselves.

While it’s taken me a long time to fully grasp this truth and find peace with it, I believe I’ll now be able to make a bigger impact by not trying to “save” everyone. I find myself relating it to the gospel.

As a man of faith, I do my best to grow spiritually and share the Good News with others. I have to remind myself all the time though that not everyone who hears the gospel will necessarily receive it. The person has to be ready; in short they have to want to receive it.

Receiving And Acting On Information Are Two Different Things

This is no different than someone being ready or not to receive and act upon information to change their physical health. The “way” to change your body and transform your health is really not that complicated or mysterious. You have to eat the right foods, exercise, control stress, and live a balanced life.

The root cause behind the problems people face with their weight or health can be traced back to an imbalance in one or more of these areas. The only way to truly fix the problems is to identify all the areas where you’re out of balance and take persistent, unwavering action on correcting them.

It All Comes Down To Priorities As Excuses Only Pass The Blame

This takes time, patience, and steadfast dedication to change what it is in your life that’s out of balance. The question becomes is it important enough, or better stated a high enough priority in your life to stick with it until the job is done?

Excuses are prevalent in our society and everyone seems to have something or someone else to blame for their problems. Look no further than the current state of politics in our country to see this exemplified. It’s truly sad and no wonder why so many people have such a pessimistic view for our nation’s future.

Excuses do nothing more than justify the current conditions and work to keep and individual (or a country for that matter) stuck exactly where they don’t want to be. The only way real change can come is when personal responsibility takes the center stage.

It doesn’t matter what happened in the past, what someone else did, or how the deck has been stacked against you. Wallowing in self-pity, excuses, or justification on why things “are the way they are” only produces more of the same. Everyone knows deep down in their heart this is the truth.

So Why Don’t More People Accept The Truth And Make A Change?

In my experience the reason is quite simple. You may not want to hear this but it’s the cold hard truth. If you’re stuck right now in a body you’re not happy and aren’t doing everything and anything to change it, it’s only because it’s not a high enough of a priority.

I can hear it now, “But Shane you don’t understand,” followed by any number of excuses. Don’t get me wrong, I’m empathetic to the obstacles that you may have to overcome. But nobody said life is fair and you’d be guaranteed an easy road to travel.

One person simply makes a change in exercise and diet habits and sees quick results. The next person has to overcome a series of obstacles and it’s a much longer road to the end goal. No it isn’t fair but that’s life.

The Question Is What Are You Going To Do About It?

When having the body and health you desire is high enough of a priority you’ll do whatever it takes. Excuses wont’ matter as you’ll stop thinking in ways that keep you stuck. You’ll search for the answers to help you overcome any and all obstacles and stay the course for as long as it takes.

I can’t tell you the total number of excuses I’ve heard over the years. They’re too numerous to count. But the truth is they’re typically all nothing more than self-justification and insight into a person’s “readiness” for change.

The battle is won or lost between your ears my friend. I couldn’t have found a more fitting title for this post. If you’re stuck, do an honest self-assessment of the reasons why and where you may be making excuses. This will undoubtedly be a painful and humbling exercise but it’s critical if you really want to turn the direction of your life.

When Failure Is No Longer An Option

I’ve said this many times before that the most successful people in making a body transformation all have one thing in common…..strong emotional reasons tied to their desire to change. They didn’t want to change their body just because “they should” but rather out of an attitude that failure was no longer an option.

If you’re not there yet, don’t give up! Things can change in the blink of an eye. The most important thing you can do is take action on starting to do the things you know will get you closer to your goal. Motion beats meditation every time. Don’t just think and dwell on all the reasons why you’re failing, take action!

Be patient with yourself and succumb to the fact that it may take time. Resolve to throw out all the excuses and temptations to look for the quick fix. Look at your body and your life from the outside looking in. Think in terms of balance and examine the big picture.

If you’re struggling to lose weight, the answer may not be as simple as “eating less and exercising more.” Chances are there will be hormonal imbalances to overcome along with behavioral, lifestyle, and other numerous changes to make.

Don’t give up when you see someone else getting results faster than you and for heaven’s sake STOP sabotaging your own success.

What Would You Do If The Stakes Were As High As They Could Get?

If you question what I’m telling you that this all comes down to priorities I want to leave you with this thought. For the sake of discussion let’s say you all of a sudden receive a bad doctor’s report that you have some rare disease and will likely die in the next 30 days….that is unless you do one simple thing.

The doctor tells you that you have a 100% chance for a full recovery if you eat a special diet exclusively from two different fruits and vegetables. You can’t eat anything else and if you do you’ll die.

I know this sounds silly, but do you think you’d follow through? Of course you would because nothing would be more important of a priority. Heck, you’d eat dirt for 30 days if that would save you.

Think long and hard on this as it’s going to really expose where you’re at. If you’re not living in a body that you’re happy with, chances are you’re making excuses with more than just the food you’re eating.

You’re accepting something less than the best for what you could have in your life. This should make you mad, and it’s this kind of fire in your belly that will make you say “I’m mad as hell and not going to take it anymore!”

It’s my hope that this is exactly what happens because then I’ll have no doubts that you’ll be successful. I’ve seen it too many times on both sides of the fence to know this to be true.

My last word of advice is to avoid walking alone and isolating yourself from the support of others who can help you. You don’t have to do this all by yourself! In fact, I’ll tell you straight up that most people who try and produce significant changes in their life without support typically fail.

Don’t be this person.

I’ve long said that the real benefit a personal trainer provides someone is not the instruction, but rather the support and accountability. Knowing how to do the right exercises and the right foods to eat does nothing. Acting on that information is what makes the difference. Only you can follow through, and you’ll only do it if it’s important enough in your life.

If I can help you make that transformation I’m always ready to show you the “way.” If you’ve been exposed to the “way” but have fallen off track for whatever reason, the road back is as simple as making a decision.

No guilt, pressure, or “I told you so” from me. I understand it’s all about timing. But when you’re truly “ready, willing, and able” to do whatever it takes to make a change, I’ll be here for you.
