Anyone who has followed me for a while has heard me speak about the 80/20 rule. This is without question one of the most valuable rules you can learn for success not only with your diet but with life in general.

Almost everything I can think of in my life fits into this rule. If you really step back and think about this it’s so true. The Pareto Principle aka 80-20 rule states that for most events roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes.

I was going through my files this morning looking for a case study when I came across some notes I had on an old client.

I’ve got folders full of scribbled notes on tablet paper from client consultations that I’ve kept over the years in part of my fat loss research. I figured it would be a good idea to start sharing some of these stories as there are some very valuable lessons that can be picked up from them.

So why is it that women have a much harder time with losing weight then men do as they get older? While both groups will certainly find their bodies have changed from their early twenties to their mid thirties and beyond, it’s women who are much more likely to suffer from “metabolic slowdown.”

This is nothing more than a series of changes in the body that result in the down regulation of a person’s metabolism.  There are three main reasons why metabolic slowdown occurs, especially with women more so than men.

Alright here’s the storyline. You make a decision to get healthier and lose some weight so you quit the Egg McMuffin at Mickey-D’s and start making protein fruit smoothies for breakfast.

It’s got to be better for you right? Seems like common sense but you need to take a closer look.

This is part two in my series on “fat loss truths.” I’ve created this series to help shed some light on the myths and misconceptions about what really works to lose fat and transform your body.

While I look to regularly comment and post on the latest trends in weight loss, I felt it would be helpful to reinforce the facts about what I know to work.

While some of these “truths” may not be new to you, it’s always good to go back to the basics. This will keep you from being tempeted to run blindly after the latest fad diet or so called fat loss breakthrough. Read the rest of this entry »

I was running through Publix the other day getting a few things when I bumped into an old client and friend of mine. During our conversation she asked me a question that a lot of people seem to have with dieting. Her question was:

“Is there a simple and easy way to determine the number of calories I’m actually eating during the day?”

You’ve undoubtedly heard the advice before about writing down the foods you eat in a journal when trying to lose weight. Journaling has long been considered by weight loss experts an extremely effective strategy for lifestyle and behavioral change.

But the case for keeping a food journal just got even stronger. A recent study by the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research showed that individuals who kept daily food records lost twice as much weight as those who kept no records. Read the rest of this entry »

For years it’s been common knowledge that consuming too many calories would make you fat and cutting back on calories would make you lose weight. As you probably already know through experience it’s just not that simple.

Would you believe that no one has ever proven the calorie theory to be true? Nobody. There’s not a single research study that you’ll find that shows if you feed people the same amount of excess calories they will gain the same amount of weight or vice versa. Read the rest of this entry »
