Short bursts of high intensity exercise, otherwise known as interval training, has once again proven itself to be the ideal exercise for improving fitness and increasing fat loss. A recent study by Canadian researchers found that six sessions of high-intensity interval training on a stationary bike increased muscle oxidative capacity by almost 50 percent and endurance capacity by an amazingĀ 100 percent! While using traditional cardio equipment like treadmills, elliptical trainers, indoor cycles, stairclimbers and the like work fine, there are some great interval training alternatives to choose from. Bottom line is you must first work on building an aerobic base with low-moderate intensity cardio then progress to higher intensity burst or interval training for optimal results.
