When it comes to exercise everyone wants to know how to see the best results in the shortest amount of time. While there is a limit on what you can expect in a minimal time, don’t be fooled into believing more is better with exercise.

From a fat loss standpoint the most effective workouts will be completed in less than 30 minutes. Sound too good to be true? It’s not and the idea of a thirty minute or less workout will make sense once you understand how exercise intensity impacts the hormonal systems in your body.

After years of trail and error and countless research hours I have found that any successful body transformation program is built around four key elements.

They are as follows; cardiovascular exercise, a concern for muscle, supportive nutrition and proper progression.

It’s important to understand that you must have all four components in place to see long-term, lasting results. The majority of quick-fixes only focus on one piece of the puzzle and that’s why they ultimately fail.

All exercise is good for us right, especially for cardiovascular health benefits? I for one have long argued this simply isn’t the case and now it looks like researchers have found evidence to support this idea.

In a study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology (Feb 2011) researchers examined the heart health in a group of very fit older athletes.

These were men who had been part of a national or Olympic team in distance running or rowing, along with runners who had completed over one hundred marathons.

The results were staggering…half of these lifelong athletes showed evidence of heart muscle scarring.

I received a great question this morning from one of my readers and I thought it would make for an informative topic of discussion. Basically, this person was STUCK from a weight loss standpoint and wondered if more cardio would be the solution?

As you can imagine a question like this would be difficult to answer without knowing how much cardio the person was already doing along with some other basic details. A quick email to her answered my questions and I was able to give her some recommendations.

Maybe you’ve heard of interval training. Maybe you haven’t. Chances are you’ve done interval training it and just didn’t know it. Have you ever tried to chase a loose dog through an open park? I’ve seen people do this countless times. I recently saw a guy try to take his dog home after Frisbee tossing in a local park.

The dog, which was pretty smart simply wasn’t ready to go. The dog would run away for a few seconds, stop, start again, dart this way and that and then take off for what seemed like a country mile.

Last week David Quick of the Post & Courier wrote an excellent article regarding the impact of exercise on metabolism. Kudos to David for doing a fine job researching and writing an informative article.

I wanted to expand on some of the points in his article as this is a very important subject in relation to fat loss. Specifically, there’s a common misconception that doing more exercise is better when it comes to fat loss, since you’ll burn more calories.

One of the most common questions I get from people is what’s the best way to do cardio if your goal is to lose weight?

The truth of the matter is the answer really depends on your level of cardiovascular fitness and overall health.

In short, for best results your cardio prescription should be personalized for you by a fitness professional. Read the rest of this entry »

Short bursts of high intensity exercise, otherwise known as interval training, has once again proven itself to be the ideal exercise for improving fitness and increasing fat loss.

A recent study by Canadian researchers found that six sessions of high-intensity interval training on a stationary bike increased muscle oxidative capacity by almost 50 percent and endurance capacity by an amazing 100 percent! Read the rest of this entry »

When it comes to fat loss, not all cardio exercises are created equal. While using traditional cardio equipment like treadmills, elliptical trainers, indoor cycles, stairclimbers and the like work fine, there are some great interval training alternatives to choose from.

Bottom line is you must first work on building an aerobic base with low-moderate intensity cardio then progress to higher intensity burst or interval training for optimal results. The following list represents my top 20 favorite cardio exercises for burning fat. Read the rest of this entry »

When it comes to the best type of cardio for fat loss I’ve been on record time and again saying that absolutely nothing can come close to the fat burning benefits of high-intensity, short duration, interval training.

In this post I’m going to go into more detail on how to complete interval training correctly and help you avoid the biggest mistakes that people make when doing an interval workout.

Learning how to do intervals correctly can make all the difference between you rapidly shedding pounds of body fat or remaining frustrated from not seeing results at all. Read the rest of this entry »
