Everyone knows rule #1 with dieting when looking to shed unwanted body fat. You’ve got to cut out the sugars! Unfortunately this is easier said than done for most people.

There is no question that excess sugar in the body is one of the primary reasons that people struggle with fat loss. However, it’s not the calories in sugar that poses the problem but rather the impact sugar has on the hormonal systems in your body.

Consuming a diet high in processed sugars, refined foods, and starch carbohydrates combined with a lack of exercise is almost a sure-fire way to develop insulin resistance and metabolic X syndrome.

You’ve got to control insulin levels and improve sensitivity at the cell receptors if you’re ever going to have a chance with removing body fat. While there are medications to help regulate blood sugar level, no medication on the face of the earth will correct the root of the problem.

In part one of the “Uncovering Hidden Weight Loss Obstacles” series we talked about how digestive system imbalances can be one of the most common hidden problems with not being able to lose fat.

The importance of a digestive system cleanse so you can properly assimilate nutrients was addressed as well as some healthy ways to remove metabolic waste prior to starting a fat loss routine.

In part two of this series I’ll be going into detail on how stress can activate your fat storing switches and keep you stuck in a weight loss plateau.

I’ve been doing a lot of reading and research lately on healing foods and herbs. When it comes to healing foods, there weren’t too many surprises.

If you want to cleanse, heal, and detoxify your body eat more raw-living foods like fruits and vegetables.

Restoring your body to a more alkaline state can do some pretty amazing things.

Certain herbs can also be very helpful in healing the body and that’s what I was finding really interesting in my research.

I frequently get questions about my opinion of drinking milk. This is one of those areas where you’ll find a lot of controversy even from the so called experts.

There’s always going to be people who take a hard stand on the polar opposites of any issue and this is to be understood. However, like most people I like to simply evaluate everything and make my own personal choices.

Here’s where I come down on the issue of drinking milk…

I don’t know if you saw this but earlier this month CNN released a story about a Kansas State nutrition professor who went on a ten week diet consisting of Twinkies, Little Debbie snack cakes, Hostess cupcakes, and other junk foods.

The headline read “Twinkie diet helps nutrition professor lose 27 pounds.” I cringed when I read those words as if there wasn’t enough misinformation and confusion about fat loss in the media.

I’ve been reading some research lately comparing junk food addiction to that of drug addiction and I’m blown away that this doesn’t get more coverage.

Scientists are discovering that eating processed and refined foods can create a similar chemical response in the brain to that of drugs like cocaine and heroin.

Are you kidding me? Doesn’t anybody else see the shock value in that last statement? I mean I think nobody is really all that surprised that junk food can be addicting, no big news there…

We hear about carbohydrates being the culprit for weight gain all the time. Are they really the problem? The truth is it all depends on what type of carbohydrates we’re talking about.

I received a great question this morning from one of my readers and I thought it would make for an informative topic of discussion. Basically, this person was STUCK from a weight loss standpoint and wondered if more cardio would be the solution?

As you can imagine a question like this would be difficult to answer without knowing how much cardio the person was already doing along with some other basic details. A quick email to her answered my questions and I was able to give her some recommendations.

When it comes to weight loss insulin is one of the most important hormones in the mix. The majority of people who are overweight have some degree of what’s called “insulin resistance.”

This is where the body no longer responds to insulin as it should and becomes insensitive to it. The end result is the fat storing switches being left on and the body programmed to send energy to fat cells instead of muscle cells.

In this post I’m going to explain the main reasons why insulin resistance occurs and your best strategies on reversing it. Read the rest of this entry »
