When it comes to exercise everyone wants to know how to see the best results in the shortest amount of time. While there is a limit on what you can expect in a minimal time, don’t be fooled into believing more is better with exercise.

From a fat loss standpoint the most effective workouts will be completed in less than 30 minutes. Sound too good to be true? It’s not and the idea of a thirty minute or less workout will make sense once you understand how exercise intensity impacts the hormonal systems in your body.

If you’ve ever struggled with trying to lose weight only to fail time and time again I understand your pain. There are few things more frustrating than really trying to stick with a diet plan only to see the scale stuck on a number that won’t budge.

Over the years as a fitness coach and personal trainer I’ve discovered there are three main reasons why most people blow it. I’m going to share with you what these three reasons are and how to finally lose the weight you want once and for all.

When it comes to losing weight and unwanted body fat there’s a big misconception that results come solely from exercise and diet. These are certainly two very important pieces of the puzzle but not the only factors.

There are hidden obstacles with weight loss that can prevent the body from taping into energy reserves. See my series of articles on that subject for more information.

All exercise is good for us right, especially for cardiovascular health benefits? I for one have long argued this simply isn’t the case and now it looks like researchers have found evidence to support this idea.

In a study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology (Feb 2011) researchers examined the heart health in a group of very fit older athletes.

These were men who had been part of a national or Olympic team in distance running or rowing, along with runners who had completed over one hundred marathons.

The results were staggering…half of these lifelong athletes showed evidence of heart muscle scarring.

If you’re looking to build muscle, lose fat, and increase strength and power, burst training is the ticket. What is burst training? It’s high intensity-short duration resistance training that works to stimulate hormonal responses that speed up fat loss.

Most people look to build fitness through weight machine exercises and low-intensity aerobics. While this approach has some benefits it develops little power, strength, speed or functional fitness.

Last week David Quick of the Post & Courier wrote an excellent article regarding the impact of exercise on metabolism. Kudos to David for doing a fine job researching and writing an informative article.

I wanted to expand on some of the points in his article as this is a very important subject in relation to fat loss. Specifically, there’s a common misconception that doing more exercise is better when it comes to fat loss, since you’ll burn more calories.

This month I’m going to be starting a new section on my website where I’ll be reviewing fitness products, equipment, supplements, books, diets, and the like. The idea is providing you with resource to get my unbiased opinion of fitness and nutrition related products.

Short bursts of high intensity exercise, otherwise known as interval training, has once again proven itself to be the ideal exercise for improving fitness and increasing fat loss.

A recent study by Canadian researchers found that six sessions of high-intensity interval training on a stationary bike increased muscle oxidative capacity by almost 50 percent and endurance capacity by an amazing 100 percent! Read the rest of this entry »
