How To Simplify Your Grocery Shopping

I’m one who believes you’ve got to keep things SIMPLE. The more complex we try and make something the more complicated it gets and the more confused people will end up being. This is certainly the case with nutrition and food choices when grocery shopping.

If the diet or nutrition plan is too darn hard to follow or figure out, people won’t stick with it very long. A perfect example of this is the “Zone Diet” from Dr. Barry Sears. Don’t get me wrong I think Dr. Sears is an incredibly intelligent man who’s research has been monumental in our understanding of hormonal response, genetic expression, inflammation, etc.

When I first read his book “The Zone Diet” some fifteen years ago it was the most influential book on nutrition that I had read up to that point. I was convinced that Dr. Sears was really on to something and his nutrition model became my foundation for teaching clients.

If you were with me way back in the day you may have a workshop manual or other guide that references Zone Diet strategies.

So what happened, why I am not still teaching Zone principals?

It’s not because I no longer believe in the research, science, or anything like that. It’s because of ONE simple reason…it’s too dang hard to follow!

Anyone who has ever tried going on the Zone diet will tell you “simplicity” is not a word that can be used to describe it. By the time you’re finished counting “blocks” to ensure you’re within the correct ratios of proteins, carbs, and fats, you’ll think eating has become a math equation!

Now in all fairness, you could say the same thing about my “Rapid Fat Loss Diet“  but that’s meant to be a specific short-term strategy and not a lifestyle eating plan. To really dial things in there’s no way to really work around being specific.

Having said that, any “diet” strategy should be viewed as something you do for very short windows of time.

Sooner or later you have to develop a lifestyle eating plan. This should be the PRIMARY GOAL of every individual who wants to change their body composition and improve their health.

The longer you go trying to count calories, points, blocks, or anything like that, the more likely you are to “crash” and fall back into old habits.

I’ve seen this far too many times over the years to know it’s the gospel truth.

Simplicity MUST be at the foundation of your lifestyle eating plan. You don’t have to diet to lose weight, I can promise you that. You will however have to change how you eat and provide your body with energy and nutrients.

The most effective and simple way to do this is to follow a Primal Blueprint of Paleo way of eating. Today, this is the way I teach clients to eat. There’s no counting of calories, measuring, calculations or any of that stuff. You simply eat whenever you’re hungry and only enough until you’re no longer hungry (not full, there’s a big difference).

The key thing is you’re eating primarily from natural, whole foods. If you can do this 80% of the time or greater, you will win…period. You just need to be giving your body “real food” and not the processed and refined man-made garbage that has become the staple of the standard American diet.

I found this funny flow-chart of how to find real food at the supermarket that pretty much sums it up.

Here’s the bottom line…

In summary, if God made it eat it, if He didn’t leave it alone! I stole that from the late Jack Lalanne but that one statement pretty much sums it up.

Take the Primal Blueprint Challenge for just 30 days and be the judge for yourself. You can read more about the Primal Blueprint by following this link. I encourage you to get the Primal Blueprint book by Mark Sisson as it will change the way you look at dieting forever.
