Is 30 Minutes Really Enough For Workouts?

In today’s post I want to address a question I get all the time about the Burst Training workouts we do here at Shaping Concepts. A lot of people are initially hesitant that a 30 minute workout can really produce the results they’re looking for. This is especially true if they’re used to doing traditional 60-90 minute health club workouts.

Even if you don’t currently workout, it might seem a little far fetched to believe you could get optimal results in 30 minutes or less. I believe a lot of this has to do with the marketing pitches that lure people with unrealistic expectations. Look, I’ve been in this game a long time and there’s no way you’re going to get a toned tummy with “6 minute abs” or anything like that.

It may sell a lot of books or DVD’s, but it’s nothing more than marketing hype. If you want to change your shape you’re going to have to work hard at it and put in some time. Now having said that, it’s a complete myth and total misconception that you have to spend hours in the gym to get a lean, fit body.

The simple truth is this….it’s not how long you exercise but rather the intensity of your workouts that really matters.

And exercise is no different than anything else, there’s a point of diminished returns where more is not necessarily better.

I want to share with you a real quick video clip from a client here at Shaping Concepts. Phoebe Vollmer came to us from a local health club where she had been doing 90 minute workouts.

She wasn’t satisfied with her result so she decided to give burst training a try with one of our Charleston personal trainers…I’ll let you hear it from her what she found.

Shaping Concepts was built around this whole concept of the 30 minute burst training workout. Not as a marketing gimmick but rather out of a proven method to produce a change in body composition.

I’ve been promoting burst training for years because it just seemed to work better than any other workout I used either on myself or with clients. And believe me, I’ve tried just about everything you can imagine.

The whole concept is backed by research that shows a significant increase in powerful fat burning hormones like growth hormone, testosterone, nor-adrenaline, and IGF-1 with short bursts of high intensity effort followed by brief recovery periods.

This is in stark contrast to a typical health club or gym workout. There’s no going from machine to machine and taking long breaks between sets to chat with other people in the gym or prep in the mirror.

There’s no secret what produces results and what doesn’t…hard work and NOT “lolly-gagging” and talking through workouts. Which picture more resembles your current workout?

Burst training is all about working your tail off with all out effort and moving fast. The idea is to push your muscles with an overload stimulus in order to promote a change. Yes, that means you have to work hard!

The payoffs are definitely worth it though if you’re serious about a body transformation. The real secret behind short, high-intensity workouts is the hormonal responses it produces. While you can get away with starving yourself on restrictive diets and doing a bunch of cardio when you’re younger to stay trim, the truth is this won’t work when you get older.

Once you get into your thirties, forties, and beyond, hormone levels start to decrease, lean muscle is lost and your metabolism gradually declines. The way to offset all this is to do resistance training, but not just any resistance training!

Sure you could do a traditional health club type workout for an hour and spend another 30 minutes or so on some cardio equipment but this method does nothing to boost the secretion of fat burning hormones. In fact, the longer you go with exercise, the more likely you are to get “catabolic” and have the exact opposite effect.

The bottom line is you’re likely to maintain your physique with this kind of strategy but not see a significant change. The health clubs are filled with people working out for an hour or more everyday but they never really seem to look any different.

If you’re fine with that and enjoy spending that much time in the gym, far be it from me to tell you to do anything different. But if you’re doing it because you think you need to spend that much time working out to see results, I’ll challenge you to try my way for just 30 days.

You can read up on “Burst Training” by following this link or come in to see me for a free trial. I’ll let you experience the difference these kind of workouts can produce and let you be the judge.

Phoebe is just one individual in a long list of people who were initially hesitant that a 30 minute workout could produce better results than an hour or more in the gym. I’ll let our success stories from clients provide the proof on whether or not it really works.

You’ve got nothing to lose but some sweat and inches from your waistline! I won’t tell you that it will be easy, we’ll leave that to the quick-fix gurus, I’ll simply tell you that it will be worth it.
