Why I’m Hooked On Cinnamon

I’ve been doing a lot of reading and research lately on healing foods and herbs. When it comes to healing foods, there weren’t too many surprises.

If you want to cleanse, heal, and detoxify your body eat more raw-living foods like fruits and vegetables.

Restoring your body to a more alkaline state can do some pretty amazing things.

Certain herbs can also be very helpful in healing the body and that’s what I was finding really interesting in my research.

It’s hard to argue that if you were suffering from ANY sickness or ailment you’d likely see significant benefits from switching to a “raw or live” food diet.

Personally, I typically follow more of Primal Blueprint type diet. This is for several reasons but mostly because I find it difficult going without eating any meat for long periods of time.

This may be doable for some people but at 240 lbs it’s real hard for me to maintain my strength when I’m eating nothing but plants. Plus I just happen to like eating meat.

Every now and then I get an email from someone who is angry about the fact I promote a Primal or Paleo type diet. Got one again just this past week. They’re all pretty much the same and go something like this…

Basically because I eat meat it means I’m an aggressive person, that I’m hurting the environment, that I’m not respecting the rights of animals, and the list goes on.

Hey look, everyone’s got their own beliefs and I’m one for saying “to each his own.” You do your thing and I’ll do mine and so long as we’re not hurting each other I’ll expect each of us to mind our own business.

Here’s a unique thought. Imagine how much better things could be if everyone followed that simple rule. Oh well, it was a nice thought all for about two seconds. Guess I have to get used to the fact that the world is changing.

I don’t go around telling people they’re dumb if they don’t eat Primal, I simply share what I believe and personally follow in an attempt to coach, inspire, and teach like minded individuals.

Big difference, but on that I’ll digress….you’ll have to excuse me as I go eat a big juicy steak. Ah, I’m just playing with ya! I’ve got nothing but love for my vegan friends.

I can’t argue with the fact that we’d all benefit from eating more fruits and vegetables. This is truly the base of the food pyramid in my opinion and for good reason.

We need the enzymes, phytonutrients, and healthy bacteria that get destroyed by cooking foods at high temperatures. This is especially true for the enzymes but that’s a topic for another day.

Every so often I go through phases where I really like to cleanse and detoxify my body. I did this just recently and part of my strategy was to remove any food or drink that was acidic…this included coffee.

I planned on this being the hardest part of the detox as I’ve really come to love my morning coffee. I used to not be much of a coffee drinker but my beautiful wife Lina who is originally from Colombia, got me hooked on the real deal Colombia coffee.

No cream or sweeteners for me as I prefer to drink it straight black. Now, it’s not that I’m necessarily convinced coffee is “bad” for you. In fact, I have to believe it’s more about moderation as coffee provides beneficial antioxidants.

Remember we’re talking about a cup of coffee here not some grande frappacchino…crappachino or whatever you call it with a bunch of fattening cream and sugar.

I remember reading somewhere that one of those Starbucks coffee’s has more fat than a quarter pounder with cheese. No joking.

Anyways, so I made the decision to give up coffee for the week and the first few days did nothing in the morning except for holistic health guru, Lou Corona’s favorite “Lemon Ginger Blast.” I’m going to do an entire post on this drink as it does some amazing stuff for your body.

We’ll the first few days I was fine but I was just missing something hot to drink. I sort of have this habit of drinking my coffee in the truck on the way to work in the morning. With that being gone I set out to find an alternative.

What I came up with was doing some Tazo organic herbal apple-cinnamon tea. Nothing fancy, as I’d had it before and to be honest I wasn’t overly excited about it. But I came up with the idea of putting in an extra teaspoon of my organic Ceylon cinnamon just to give it a little extra kick.

Wow, what a difference! It had this real nice semi-sweet taste all without an ounce of sugar or artificial sweeteners!

Not only does it taste great but I discovered some other benefits of adding a little cinnamon to your diet.

Did you know that cinnamon can actually improve insulin sensitivity? It’s absolutely true.

Cinnamon is very effective in lowering blood sugar and cholesterol levels. This is beneficial for everyone but especially if you’re overweight. The majority of overweight individuals have low insulin sensitivity or insulin resistance (which is the precursor to diabetes).

Cinnamon is also antibacterial and a powerful antioxidant. In fact, of all of the herbs it’s one of the highest in antioxidants. It helps fight against cancer, heart disease, tooth decay, and is very helpful in correcting digestive system imbalances.

Straight up super-food, there’s no question about it.

Do go crazy with it though as just like with pretty much all other herbs, large quantities can be counterproductive.

Try it in my apple-cinnamon tea recipe for starters and see what you think. You can always add it to protein shakes, smoothies, yogurts, sprinkle across your oatmeal, you name it.

Oh yeah, one last thing. There’s a big difference in taste between high quality organic cinnamon and the stuff you buy off the shelves in the grocery store.

You want to buy some really good cinnamon go to Amazon.com and pick up some Frontier Ground Ceylon organic cinnamon. It comes in a 16 oz foil bag that will last you a while but trust me it’s worth it. This is the good stuff. There…that’s your inside scoop for the day.

Alright, that’s it for now. I’m singing the praises of cinnamon and loving my new tea. Check it out for yourself.

Feel free to leave any comment. Would love to hear from you.

Have a great weekend!
