Diligence Is The Mother Of Good Fortune

In this quote above, Spanish novelist Miguel De Cervantes was talking about not giving up. Anything worth while achieving will not come without persistence and a bit of perseverance.

Sometimes striving to achieve fitness and weight loss goals can seem like a boxing match. You have the desire to win, but even if you’re in a great program and working hard at it, the up’s and down’s of daily life can work against you like an adversary.

Temptations come at you like body blows. If you miss a couple of workouts and gain a few pounds it’s hard to stay confident and optimistic. Herein lies the challenge…can you persist through these “punches to the gut” and stay the course?

Nobody is ever going to be perfect with their nutrition or exercise. Life happens, it’s all about your commitment to the habits that will produce the level of health and fitness you want.

As my good friend and mentor Dan John always says, “It’s little and often over the long-haul” that ultimately leads to success. He’s so right…but we live in a society where the media bombards us with unrealistic expectations.

“Lose 30 lbs in 30 days” and the list goes on. We are conditioned to want it all and want it now but how often does this really work out in life?

In the real world, people who succeed in reaching their goals do so because they got crystal clear with what they wanted and what they’d be willing to sacrifice to get it.

To give yourself a chance in reaching your fitness and weight loss goals, you need to get up off the mat and start fighting again when the set-backs come your way. Like a fighter, as long as you’re still throwing punches, you have a chance to win.

Two things can help get you through tough times…

First, expect mistakes, problems, and disappointments along the way. You can accept that persistence has to be a key part of your strategy.

Second, decide that you simply won’t give up no-matter what. You know you have the inner strength to start again, several times if necessary to get back on track. People quit all the time, but you don’t have to be one of them.

After other people have dropped out, you’ll be among those who continued to get keep moving forward. Let’s make it happen in 2012!
