Amazing Client Success Story Of Over 100 Pounds Weight Loss At Shaping Concepts

I’ve long held the belief that, as a startup company and as professed here at, the best way to promote our services at Shaping Concepts is not to try and use slick marketing and a lot of hype, but rather let the social proof from our clients do most of the talking.

After all we’d all rather hear from the actual clients or customers who used the services of any business we may consider using ourselves at some time. It just makes sense to me, especially when you’re in the business of helping people see results with changing their shape.

I recently received a testimonial from one of my clients, Hope Reardon, and wanted to share it with you. Her story is very inspiring and hopefully it provides encouragement to others who may be on the verge of giving up hope of ever losing weight.

I’m extremely grateful for her sharing what she’s experienced. I couldn’t be more proud of her for all that she’s accomplished by being committed and staying consistent.

Alright, without further ado, here’s her story.

More after the jump…

Testimonial from Hope

“Shaping Concepts has to be one of the best-kept secrets here in Charleston!  When the “trainer” I was working with at my gym moved out of the country, I discovered Shaping Concepts from a quick web search and I am sooo thankful that I called to meet with them.

I just wish I discovered them a few months sooner when I started my weight loss journey.  Eleven months ago when I walked into Shaping Concepts not only was I hoping to change my life for the better, I was also willing to give up my “Diet-Band-Aid” approach to trying to lose weight and wanted to learn how to make permanent life style changes for a more healthier and stronger me.

I knew in my mind that I needed to do something different to help with my weight loss journey, but after sitting down and talking with Mandy I realized that I found the perfect place that would help me reach my diet, exercise and weight loss goals.

That day I signed up for their “Slim in 6 Body Transformation Program” and loved my initial 6 months with them that when my sessions were over I signed up for another year worth of one on one personal training sessions.  (I think I might be a wee bit addicted to working out with them.)

Since the beginning of December (2011) when I started at Shaping Concepts, I have to say that I am a totally different person, inside and out.  My friends and family have told me that my personality has changed from being a shy quiet introvert to a more outgoing bubbly person willing to take more risks.

I have to admit that I am very blessed to be working weekly with two outstanding trainers; Shane Doll and Joe McDevitt.

They say a picture will convey more than a 1000 words.  My “now” picture clearly shows the remarkable results I have been able to achieve through the commitment, enthusiasm, knowledge, and patience from my two AWESOME trainers.

Not only have I lost a little over 100 pounds, 18 inches, and 19%  body fat, I have been able to go from a woman’s size 20 to wearing a size 2 to 4.

Five months after I hit my goal weight I am still trying to wrap my head around my new clothing size. When I go to buy new clothes I am still drawn to the much larger sizes and the sales ladies just can’t believe that I used to weigh 100 pounds more.

One time I was voicing complaints to Shane about my lack of weight loss, he looked me in the face and told me that he didn’t want me to lose any more weight! You could have knocked me over with a feather, whoever has heard of a trainer telling you not to lose weight?

Even though I have been at my smallest size for five months now my trainers have been working with me on trying to lose that last little bit of body fat, and to keep building my lean muscle mass and of course strength.

I believe that the kind people at Shaping Concepts have changed my life for the better. I am signing up for races that I would never think about doing. Last year I ran part of the Cooper River Bridge Run.

To work on running, Carol, the office manager at Shaping Concepts, started a running club over the summer and I am in training with her to run the half marathon on Kiawah Island in a month.

A year ago I was not a runner, just the though of running made me want to hide in bed. I believe it is through the support and encouragement of the team at Shaping Concepts that I would be doing a half marathon. Everyone over at Shaping Concepts believes you can do anything that you put your mind to, and they will help you reach that goal!

I train with Shane two times a week and Joe on the third day, and I have to say that everyone who works here are the most patient and encouraging people that I have met!

The trainers keep every 30-minute session new and challenging, pushing me beyond what I think I could do and believing that I can do any exercise they think up.

The 30 minutes in my book fly by so fast!  The trainers keep you going for the full 30 minutes, pushing you when you need to be pushed and helping when you need that little bit of help. I have enjoyed getting my butt kicked three times a week for the past eleven months, and when I can’t make a session I am upset knowing that I am missing out on something great.

I have my training times set in my calendar and plan my life around them, not the other way around.  One week I had to miss my sessions because of a family emergency and I emailed Shane to let him know how upset I was that I was going to be gone and if he could make suggestions on what I could do at the hotel.

He came up with a couple of workout plans for me to easily follow. Even though I had Shane’s plans it was still not the same as being with him.  I know I probably didn’t push myself the way Shane or Joe would have.

To be honest I truly look forward to my sessions knowing that I will be pushed both mentally and physically, and I will leave the studio dead tired.  But it is the good kind of tired, knowing that you were able to accomplish a mini goal that was set, push your self , hit a personal best or made strides to making your big goal.

That poor puppy is me almost every night, right before I leave the studio. Ha!

I have taken what I have learned from Shaping Concepts and I am even getting the little four year olds I teach exercising and moving daily. Before Shaping Concepts I didn’t have the energy or motivation to be running and exercising with the kids, now we are racing daily at recess and practicing our jumping rope.

I am using exercise as a way to help my children learn how to count. There is nothing more exciting than seeing 20 four year olds trying to do push-ups, sit ups, jumping jacks, toe touches and learning how to do the plank by counting out our reps.

What is great is that the kids are now asking to do exercises while we are waiting at car rider time and they are showing and telling the other kids outside how to do it.  Too Cute!  I know before the end of the year they will have the plank down pat like an expert.

Shane also holds me accountable for keeping a nutrition log of what I am eating daily, and doing cardio training on the days that we are not meeting, this is something that the “trainer” I had at my gym didn’t do.

Diet and exercise go hand in hand when trying to lose weight, and I have to thank Shane and Mandy for helping me and giving me the tools I needed to make nutritional changes in my diet. I have tried many different “eating/weight loss” programs in the past.

You name it I am sure I tried it.  It was not until reading Shane’s book and listening to his Lean Code Method Seminar, and talking with Mandy about what I was eating, that I learned how to eat better, and change the “I am on a diet” attitude to “I am making a life style change.”

One of the great things about Shaping Concepts is the added nutritional aspect.  Since I have started at Shaping Concepts I have kept a daily food journal with what I have been eating and the times of when I eat my meals.  The thing with the food journal is that you need to be truthful with what you are eating.

They can’t help you if you are not honest about what you are eating. I have to admit that I have noted in my food logs to Shane and Mandy that I caved and had a piece of my beloved Publix cake.

Instead of fussing at me for eating the cake, they helped me stop feeling guilty for eating it and to stop beating myself up and to enjoy the treat once in a while.

There is a saying going around “If at first you don’t succeed…try doing what your trainer told you to do the first time!”

This is so true, once I started listening to Shane’s advice about my nutrition and how much outside exercise I was doing the weight started to come off.

When I have gotten stuck at the dreaded plateau, Shane and I will sit down and look over the logs, and he will make little changes to my diet and exercise.  He has even suggested that I eat more and exercise less! Say what?

It took me a bit to fully understand this, even though it drove me crazy not to go on runs in the afternoon after school I listened to him, and sure enough my body responded the right way to his advice.

What amazes me is that no matter what twists and turns my body throws at him, he is able to problem solve and get the results I would like to have. What took a while to sink into my brain was that I really needed to start trusting Shane and the process.

Once I started to trust Shane and this process my body respond and I got more energy and felt healthier and stronger.

Trust me, at Shaping Concepts they sure know what they are talking about!  What works for one person might not work for another, this is why everything over there is so personalized to you and what you need.

From past experiences when I have tried to lose weight on my own and I hit that dreaded plateau, I would have just given up and thrown in the towel and gone back to my old ways of sitting on the couch watching TV and enjoying whatever junk I would buy at the store.

I have been stuck at a plateau now for about two months, and if it was not for Shane’s problem solving and working with me at almost every session on my nutritional and cardio changes, I would have tossed in the towel and given up the minute things got tough and were not going the way I wanted them to.

Now, I know that I have Shane and the other trainers at Shaping Concepts backing me up and they will help me work through the tough parts. I will not have to try to figure this out on my own.

My friends have questioned why I am still going to Shaping Concepts now that I have lost all of my weight and still working out with Shane and Joe, and the main reasons I tell them I am still there is because of the support, coaching, guidance and accountability that they offer not to mention how I feel when I walk out of their doors after my session.

There have been days that I have gone to my training not feeling good, had a really bad day at school, or feeling kind of crabby and not wanting to be there.

It is hard to describe the magic that happens in those short 30 minutes when you are there, but when I leave I feel 100% better and so thankful that I showed up.  It is like all the negativity is washed out of my body during this time through hard work and laughter.

What I have noticed is that even though the trainers are super busy they will take the time either after or before your training session to sit down and talk with you if you want about anything you would like help with from what you are eating to ways to change up your cardio routines.

Shane has coached and guided me numerous times after my training sessions helping me get back on track. I have to say that EVERYONE who works at Shaping Concepts is incredibly supportive.  When you complete an incredibly hard workout with your trainer, the other trainers are there celebrating with you.

They are there to celebrate the big and small accomplishments.  EVERYONE at Shaping Concepts wants you to be successful, and they are there to help you reach whatever goals you have in mind, you just need to tell them what they are. Of course your trainer will have some goals for you to work on as well.

I believe it is the people who make a business successful, and Shaping Concepts has the most knowledgeable, friendly and helpful individuals working there from the trainers to the ladies Mandy and Carol.

Remember the old TV show Cheers, and when someone would walk in the door everyone would turn around and yell “Hi so & so” well this happens at Shaping Concepts.

When you walk in the door you get greeted by name and they make it feel like this is the place for you to be for the next 30 or so minutes. If you are looking for a Charleston personal trainer to help with building strength and or weight loss, this is the place to be.

They are NOT like the trainers you will find at your local chain gym. If you are looking for a place to hold you accountable for working out and what you are eating; Shaping Concepts is the place to be!

When you start coming to Shaping Concepts you are treated like you have been apart of their family for the longest time.”
