Breaking Your Addiction To TV

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

The American Heart Association released a study this week reporting that people who spend more than four hours in front of the TV daily have an 80 percent increased risk of cardiovascular death. While it’s no surprise that people who watch a lot of TV have increased health risks due to inactivity this is a staggering number.

Health experts are often heard making suggestions like “take the stairs at work,” or “park farther away in the parking lot.” This doesn’t even begin to address the root of the problem and our country’s growing obesity epidemic is proof these strategies are failing. (more…)

Insulin Resistance

Monday, January 11th, 2010

When it comes to weight loss insulin is one of the most important hormones in the mix. The majority of people who are overweight have some degree of what’s called “insulin resistance.” This is where the body no longer responds to insulin as it should and becomes insensitive to it. The end result is the fat storing switches being left on and the body programmed to send energy to fat cells instead of muscle cells. In this post I’m going to explain the main reasons why insulin resistance occurs and your best strategies on reversing it. (more…)

Low Calorie Misconceptions

Monday, January 4th, 2010

With the start of New Year’s resolutions food manufacturers are not surprisingly focusing their ad campaigns on weight loss. A primary focus will be on the calorie content of their products. While calorie content is important don’t be fooled into thinking it’s the only factor you should consider. Low-calorie foods are not always your best option especially when they’re processed or refined. In this post I’m going to show you how to spot some of the misconceptions in commercials and ads so you can make informed decisions with you diet. (more…)

Weight Loss Versus Body Composition Change

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

I believe without question one of the biggest enemies you can have in a fitness and weight loss program is the bathroom scale. Sure you want to see the pounds go down but the problem is the scale won’t ever tell you the whole truth.

I’ve seen countless times where a client made progress with changing their body composition (body-fat/inches) but the scale didn’t move and it stirred up negative emotions that stalled progress. The objective of this post is to share with you the common pitfalls with focusing too much on the scale and shed some insight on how it can be misleading. (more…)

The One Essential Supplement For Weight Loss

Monday, November 30th, 2009

If you’ve followed my writing you’ll know that I’m not a huge supplement guy. There are individual cases where someone can greatly benefit from additional vitamins and minerals but in most cases you just need to eat more whole, natural, live foods. That’s why I’m such a big proponent of a Primal Blueprint diet.

When you eat natural foods you feed muscle and when you eat processed-refined foods you feed fat. It’s pretty much that simple. The catch is I’ve found it to be difficult always staying perfect with a Primal Blueprint diet. That’s why I depend on supplementation to help fill in the gaps. There is one supplement in particular that is non-negotiable in my opinion. It’s so important that I think it’s next to impossible to lose weight on a consistent, permanent basis without it. (more…)

Avoiding Thanksgiving Weight Gain

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

With Thanksgiving only a few days away and Christmas right around the corner I figured it would be a good idea to give you some tips on how to avoid holiday weight gain. Not only will you have to deal with diet challenges with traveling you’ve also got the temptation to overeat at holiday meals. The average thanksgiving dinner will contain over 3000 calories and when combined with snacking and other meals through the day it’s not uncommon to consume over 4500 calories. Don’t let unnecessary weight gain put a damper on an otherwise joyous holiday. Just know what you’re getting into beforehand and be prepared with a game plan. (more…)

Beer, Wine, Liquor Which Is Better For Weight Loss?

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

When I’m consulting clients on weight loss I often get asked which alcohol drink is best for weight loss. While it’s true that some choices are better than others there’s a lot of trickery being used by alcohol manufacturers to deceive you. I figured it would be helpful to give you a quick course on the straight truth about alcohol and how it impacts your body’s ability to burn fat. (more…)

Ranking Snacks For Fat Loss

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

I get asked this question all the time. “Shane, what are some of the best healthy snack choices I can choose from?” Instead of just telling you what snacks are best for weight loss, I figured it would be helpful to also explain why. We’ll start with the “worst” snack choices and move up the ladder to the “optimal” snack choices if your goal is to lose fat, increase energy, and change your shape. (more…)

Empty Calories versus Supportive Calories

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

When it comes to weight loss there’s a huge misconception about calories. While it’s true that you can’t eat more calories than your body needs and lose fat, it’s more about the quality of calories than the quantity that’s important. The food industry has done a magnificent job in deceiving people with low-fat, low-calorie, aka “diet foods.” Truth be told, it’s the processed and refined foods that are largely to blame for people not being able to lose weight. (more…)

Amazing Benefits Of Burst Training Workouts

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

If you’re looking to build muscle, lose fat, and increase strength and power in minimal time, burst training is the workout for you. What is burst training? It’s high intensity-short duration resistance training that produces results like nothing else. Most people look to build fitness through weight machine exercises and low-intensity aerobics. While this approach has some benefits it develops little power, strength, speed or functional fitness for optimal performance. (more…)
