So you’re looking to get started with a workout routine for the first time, or the first time in a long time, and the question is, “what exercises should I do?” Starting your fitness program off with the right exercises will be a determing factor for seeing the results you want and reducing your risk of injuries.

Most people who are unsure about what to do so simply watch others in the gym and mimic their workouts. This is never a good idea. The exercises that someone else performs may not be best suited for your workouts.

As you already know too much of a good thing can end up being a bad thing. Weight training is no exception. If you’re training hard chances are you’ve experienced an overtraining injury at some point in time.

The purpose of this article is to shed some insight on how you can avoid overtraining injuries. For starters the old adage “no pain, no gain” is out! I received a great question from one of my readers this week regarding hiring a personal trainer that I thought would make for a good topic of discussion.

Traditionally, personal trainers have had their older clients do mostly seated, machine-based exercises. The problem with this is it does little to help with the one thing this age group wants more than anything…mobility.

I get questions quite frequently about my thoughts on Pilates and figured it was time to do a post on this subject. Let me start off by saying that I have nothing negative to say about Pilates as a fitness modality. It certainly has benefits and it would be foolish for someone to argue otherwise.

However, I must admit that I get very irritated when I hear Pilates being marketed and promoted through misleading and false information. I’m going to share with you the three biggest myths with Pilates so you don’t get caught up in the hype.

As a fitness professional I often have people I meet tell me all the reasons why they don’t exercise. I guess they feel they need to justify their excuses when talking with me since I’m a personal trainer and they assume I’ll judge them.

The reality is I don’t judge people by the decisions they make regarding exercise in their lives. Instead I simply remind them in a respectful but caring way the reality of the impact their decision to “not exercise” will have on them both in the present and in the future.
