This is a post I’ve wanted to write for some time but it kept getting pushed aside by other projects. Today I made time to get it done.

What I wanted to write about was the fact that we’ve got some great resources for health, wellness, and fitness information right here in our own beloved hometown of Charleston, South Carolina.

There are some truly passionate people in our community writing blogs to educate, coach, and inspire others. While the major news feeds get most of the attention on the internet, I wanted to fill you in on some of these local gems.

I’ve been fortunate to meet many of the individuals I’m about to mention, a few I haven’t had the privilege yet. But one thing is for certain, they all have my gratitude and respect for the work they do.

In no particular order here are some of the top health and fitness related blogs in Charleston.

There’s no denying the impact that daily deal websites like Living Social, Group On and others have had on how consumers search for discounts on everything from massages, dining out, and even fitness training.

Time will tell whether or not this is a trend that’s here to stay or if business will start opting out in favor of other marketing mediums.

Consumers have flocked to join these services where you’re notified with daily emails on the “deal of the day” and understandably so. For most products or services offered there’s a significant discount of 50% or more. The purpose of this post is not to get into pros and cons from the businesses standpoint. That’s a discussion for another day.

Rather, I’d like to talk about the buyer’s perspective when considering whether or not to take advantage specifically with a fitness offering.

As you know, there are numerous exercise options for individuals looking to lose those unwanted pounds and get in shape.

Charleston health clubs and gyms in 2012 continue to offer up a multitude of equipment to use on your own along with group classes with everything from traditional aerobic classes to modern day variations like Zumba and BodyPump.

In recent years there has also been significant growth in small private studios in Charleston offering fitness training with specialized instruction on Yoga, Pilates, Barre, personal training, and others.

The good news is this provides Lowcountry residents with lots of options according to their individual wants, needs, and budget. The question becomes which is the best workout or facility to go to?

This week our Charleston preferred provider spotlight is on Alexandria’s Salon and Spa. Founded by the mother-daughter team of Coralie White and Alexandria Watson, they’ve created a very impressive business.

Mandy initially found out about them a couple of years ago and has been going back ever since to have Alex cut and hi-light her hair.

I went to go check them out about six months ago for a massage and absolutely loved the service I received as well. If you’re looking for a good massotherapist with a Kahuna massage chair, Lacey is your girl! She is very knowledgeable in the physiology and kinesiology of the human body which makes her stand out as a therapist in my opinion. Go see her for a massage and you won’t be disappointed.

This week our Charleston Preferred Provider spotlight is on Chiropractic USA. I’ve been a client for several years now and I can’t say enough good things about this business.

Not only because of the chiropractic massage therapist treatment I receive as a patient but also for their professionalism and caring staff.

While personal touches and true customer service seems to be a lost component with so many businesses today, Dr. Haworth of Summit to Shore Chiropractic exceeds in this area. It’s the simple things like receiving a follow up phone call from the doctor to see how I’m feeling after my adjustment.

Nutrition is the building block of fitness, literally. You can run, swim, cycle, or lift weights all you want, but if you are not following a supportive nutrition diet your results will be minimal, if there are any at all.

There’s no question that proper nutrition is at the foundation for all improvements in body composition or performance. A lot of people will tell you it’s the most challenging aspect of “getting in shape.”
